Default 2nd gear oddities

I seem to have a problem with 2nd gear. Car is a 1999 Z28 with a M6, 118k on the odometer. I sometimes have problems getting into and now lately getting out of second gear. Every other gear is perfect but I just seem to have a problem with 2nd. Car is also equipped with a B&M shifter if that helps. Any idea on what it could be? Slave cylinder was replaced at 76k. Haven't checked the clutch although i doubt that it's the problem since all other gears work fine.

2nd gear synchro and/or blocker ring is going out.. Plan-on/save-for a rebuild.

Agreed...since this is affecting a single gear it is more than lilkely an internal tranmission issue.

Do I need a complete rebuild or just a replacement of the synchro/blocker ring? How much does a good quality rebuild cost? And can any transmission shop do it or should I take it to a shop that specializes in T-56's?

If you take it to a shop, you'll spend 4x-5x in labor over parts, so you might as well replace all the blockers while they have it open. If you plan on keeping it for a while, consider the aftermarket billet syncho keys, bronze fork pads, steel 3-4 fork at the same time..

Any manual trans shop should be able to do it, but a T56/tremec specialized shop would tend to make a better job of it..

Tick performance I think is the closest specialty shop. Looks to be 1k+ for a rebuild. Don't know if I'm really looking to put that kind of money in a rebuild when it's not warrantied. Even more so since I found a shop in Garner NC that will sell this T-56 (http://rpmmotorsportsnc.com/prodshow/LevelIVt56F.html) for only $800 more.

one question about that second gear "viper" thing, when they say viper, they mean dodge viper tranmission or just the name they call viper ? thanks

I'll bet a dime to a dollar that the price doesn't include a core charge. If you look at all their Automatic transmissions, the core charge is mentioned.. So you'd be basically getting a lesser built trans for more money.. Even if there's no core, you're still getting less for the same money.. I don't see your rationale in spending $1900 when you won't spend $1100?

It wasn't that I wouldn't spend 1100 just that I would rather spend a few hundred more on a brand new transmission. Having said that I emailed them and there is a $750 core charge on their manual transmissions. I won't be going with them because 1900+750 is about the same as a brand new one.

the viper transmission is a t56. they are much more built than the ls1 trans. im guessing they take the viper 2nd gear and put in our transmission because it takes a beating.
