Default 2000 standard transmission issues

i've got a v6 base model 2000 camaro and the transmission has this problem where it will not let the stick go into first, at which point I have to jam it into reverse (which makes a grinding/crunching noise) which then for some reason clears it and it will shift fine for a stretch of time then do it again. Is this something I need to be very concerned about? I just purchased the car.

Since you are having issues in both First and Reverse, then it is most likely a clutch problem, or even a hydraulic problem. This could cause damage to the T5 tranny due to the grinding. I'd recommend at least replacing the clutch, master cylinder, and slave cylinder. It probably wouldn't hurt to go thru the tranny as well.
If you need someone to build the tranny, I can do it. Price starts at $325 parts/labor for the T5. Good luck
