Default T56 LT1 to LS1 debate.

I am in an all out debate with one of my friends on what you have to change on a LT1 T56. We looked it up on here and figured out that you have to change the input shaft and the bellhousing but the debate is over the front of the trans where the input shaft comes through. I say you do have to change it and he says no. There is a thread on here that says you do have to change it and there is one that says you dont so can someone help us out? Do you have to change that front piece? I thought you did because of where the slave cyl bolts on to it....

Yes you 100% have to change the front plate.

You are correct the bellhousing, front plate and input shaft all have to be changed.

Ok I've run into this issue. I bought a t56 back in July and the guy told me it was for a LS1. I looked up the numbers on it (13-86-017) and it looks like a ls1 t56 just by other posts but it has a clutch fork and a bell housing with provisions for the fork.
I think it must have been converted for the lt1 but why and can I just change the input shaft and still use the external slave?? I heard the internals were a bitch to bleed.

Someone probably just used that transmission for parts to covert theirs or they needed an LT1 T56 and all they could get was an LS1 trans.

But unfortunately no you can't change the input and run the external slave because the LT1 uses a "pull style" clutch and the LS1 uses a standard push style.

The internal slave isn't "that" bad. Most people who have issues bleeding them either have bad slaves or they are doing the bleeding process wrong.

ok so to convert this ls1 t56 back to a ls1 t56 its gonna cost me ~$625
That means this trans cost me 1425 in the end and idk how the internals are.
when i turn it over manually it shifts threw the gears but idk if its worth it. I need some advice.

That is true, but you never know the true condition of the new one. All you would be saving is the price of the front plate. 9 times out of 10 4th gear is bad and needs replaced anyway. You could send it to us for a refresh and have a transmission you know will last for a long time.

wow you paid 8000 hundred for it? Most places only charge 1000 for a core charge. I would say your best bet would be to send it in to tick or whoever and have it rebuilt and you wont have any issues.

that works for me. What would be the cost of sending it in for a rebuild and getting the correct parts that i need for it?

Ehh it happens. You never know what you are getting till you open them up. I paid $1500 for my first T56 swap back in 01. And it ended up being junk inside

We would just have to get it apart and see what all is damaged. If you want to give me a call tomorrow I can go over prices and what all we can do to it.
