Default How to tell if you need synchros when rebuilding a tranny??

Got my T56 apart for a 30 spline mainshaft conversion. Tranny has 107K, bought the car with 97K, and still shifted fine...SO how do you tell if I should install new sychros??? I don't wanna put the thing back together and only go 2K miles and it start grinding. But I also don't wanna spend $300 on synchros that my not be needed. THANKS!!

Basically you completely clean and dry the friction material and steel rings and mark the rings with machinist dye. Press and Rotate the friction ring against the marked steel ring/surface and the dye should be completely removed.

Remember to re-soak the friction rings with ATF before reassembling.

IMO they are a wearable item and should always be replaced on rebuilds. Those generally are the first things to go when there is an issue. IF the trans was a fresh rebuild and it was a different issue, that is one thing. 107k..... Dude, spend the money.

In general I agree.. But since you don't know the complete history of the trans, the synchros may only have 10K on them.
(The late model triple/double cone synchros wear less, tend to have fewer miles, and are 3x more expensive, but I know this is not the OP's situation.. )

If you are paying someone to rebuild, always do the new parts as the labor will offset the parts. YMMV
