Default what gear is it best to finish in 4th or 5th

before i get my axle and partlist for my new build i was wondering if i should gear it to finish at redline in 4th or 5th what would bring the faster times ??? wasn't sure with 5th being a overdrive gear but geared low a nuff the final drive ends up being the same right ???

got ya i'm fixing to build a 6 speed car and my last one went through the traps just after shifting into 5th with 4.11 gears if i didn't shift into 5th i would be on the rev limiter 70 feet or so before the finish line but it pulled hard in 5th so i was wondering why not use a lower gear like 5.14 or 5.43 and finish in 5th ???

thanks wrd1972

5th gear is an overdrive gear and not really designed for high torque loads. Bad things happen in 5th and 6th gear when abused.

If you need to go into 5th,get a taller tire. I cross in 4th at around 6,500rpm's.

Taller tire and more RPM are your friend. Or your foe

This is 100% accurate. 5th and 6th gear are designed to economy gears not performance gears.
