Repair or Rebuild T56

Repair or Rebuild T56
Hey guys. I got the project car put together. When I bought it the guy told me the trans was locked in 4th which it wasn't. It was making a grinding noise. I tried putting a new clutch/PP/TOB and pilot bearing in it but it still made the noise. Took it down to a shop and he told me it's the input bearing. He recommends replacing the input shaft/bearing, and 3-4 synchro. Should I just fix what's wrong, have the whole trans rebuilt to factory, or rebuild it and upgrade it? It's about 1/2 price to fix it instead of rebuilding the whole thing. This car is going to be my DD so it won't be beat on often. Maybe go to the track with it a few times a year. I do plan on doing full suspension though. Thanks!

I know the that the transmission that's in it isn't the original. The car shows 148,000 miles. When I pulled the trans out there was a sticker on it that said it was a rebuilt unit and had a number on it for a warranty. I drove it around after I got it back together for a little bit and it drove through all 6 gears fine. No grinding in the gears or anything it just made a grinding noise that you could mainly hear with the clutch out with the trans in neutral. I thought that I should probably just get the whole thing rebuilt- just trying to save a little $ if I could

I've been looking for a good shop to do a solid rebuild on my T56 as well. I'm leaning towards Late Model Racecraft in Texas. It's about $125 to ship it from California. Anybody have any input? Pros or cons on LMR for a trans rebuild??

I can tell you from experience take it to someone who speacializes in 6 speeds. Aamco had the trans in my camaro apart 6 times before i said no more and took it to Tick Performance and haven't had a problem yet. Before it was every few hundred miles something else would go crazy. Locking in gears, popping out of reverse grinding, you name it and it did it. It never made it 1000 miles without something happening. I've got probably 3000 on my tick rebuilt and not one little querk. Hope everything works out for you.

Like was said, Do it right, or do it again!
I would give the sponsors a call, and see what they recommend. Me personally, Im running a Level V T56 (Viper spec) from RPM Transmissions and couldnt be any happier! Have been running it since 06, and its been great!
I know its more trans than your looking for, but they really know their stuff, and customer service is GREAT!

Jeremy from RPM is the same though. Also very quick to reply.
The guys from Tick as well. As you can see I contacted all three of them and chose whoever I wanted.

I agree with pretty much everything that's been said. I purchased my T56 used and rebuilt when I did my LS1 swap, but my 3rd gear was popping out. I fixed this problem by installing billet 3-4 gear keys. I did not want to spend the extra money to have it rebuilt again and the keys put in, but now that I did I am very glad that I did, I have a lot of confidence in my transmissions quality as of now. This is where I got my billet keys, and they specialize in our T56s and many others: http://www.thegearbox.org/T56.html

The reason it costs half the price to just fix whats wrong it due to the fact that the tranny has to be completely disassembled either way. So you're paying the same labor, just less parts. Of course that is not the right way to do it. Like everyone else said, do it right the first time. My builds start at $680 and go up from there. It all depends on the condition of the speed gears and synchro assemblies. If the engagement teeth are ground down or worn, then that corresponding gear or synchro asm will need to be replaced, adding to the cost.
We actually just built a "recently rebuilt" tranny where the "other" shop didn't do the job right. This other shop was just a run of the mill tranny shop, not a specialist. They just threw in new rings and new bearings. They neglected to replace any of the worn gears or synchros. This tranny only lasted 10k miles, then it ended up at my shop.
It's definitely worth the wait to ship it out to get the job done right. Of course I prefer that you ship it to my shop, but as you can see, there are a handful of good shops on here specializing in T56s
You are welcome to call any time with any questions 817-300-6840 or the shop number is 817-847-7900

By the way, I just shipped a T56 to the LA area in California and it came out to $90, so not that bad.

Billet syncho keys are a must since the stock ones are likely to break if they haven't already. A steel 3-4 shift fork is also a good investment if the transmission is already being torn apart.
