Default Having clutch replaced, have a few questions

I have a local shop that is going to be replacing my stock clutch that is slipping with a ram powergrip clutch. I was just wondering if while he is in there should i have him replace the rear main seal, even if its not leaking? How much more do you think this will cost to have done? Also is resurfacing the flywheel fine or should i purchase a new one?

thanks
Justin

For sure, Mine had 100k on it and still fine. Also To be technical, there is a special tool GM recommends for putting a rear main in on the LS1s and I promise you Unless you are at a dealer,, they dont have the tool.. IF you are gonna pay someone to do it, You might as well pay the people who have the right tools..

Wait a minute!!! You absolutly should replace the rear main seal. Its cheap from GM around 40.00 and so easy to install to. If you shop doesnt have enough snap to push a new seal in your in the wrong place. Remeber, what it costs in labor to do your clutch it will cost again and then some, perhaps next month or even next week

I would have it replaced since you are already there.

The seal is easy to replace and doesn't need and special tool anymore. I just changed mine during my clutch install the seal costs $25 it only take a few mins to remove the old seal and install the new one.

Btw the special tool is for centering the rear cover not the seal. Don't remove the cover. Just remove the old one and install the new teflon style seal in its place. A lot of people act like **** is rocket science on ls1tech this isn't a very hard job.

if you do replace the RMS my $02 is NOT to use the teflon one, just get the rubber FelPro. With that said using the "tool" makes it very simple. There is a chance of the lip of the seal folding over without it. With the rubber seal you can grease it first, Teflon must be put on "dry".

Resurface or replace flywheel and replace pilot bushing/bearing

The felpro seal is the same as the gm teflon seal now. The teflon seal comes pre greased that's why you install it dry. Its very easy to install it has a plastic insert that keeps the inner lip from folding over during install.

Also there not talking about the tool that keeps the lip from folding over during install. It comes with EVERY gm teflon rear main seal you buy. Its not some special dealership tool.

really??

I have held both the Felpro RMS. One is rubber the other is Teflon. Neither has "grease". The only GM seal I have used is rubber and does have some grease and a "inner" plastic ring for use in installing it.

Teflon seals do not have grease on them and should not be installed with grease
