pilot bearing confusion!!!
i dont really know much about pilot bearings but anyways i pulled my old bearing today and what came out was just a metal sleeve and this really confused me because the replacement is not that kind of bearing its a needle roller bearing and i dont think my input shaft is going to fit inside the needle bearing it looks to small. also the metal sleeve does not show any signs of anything rotating the center of it just looks worn out. please help thank you.

There are two different parts you can put in there. A pilot BEARING which is the new part you have with the needle bearings. There is also a pilot BUSHING. The bushing is a solid piece of material with no moving parts.
Why dont you try fitting the bearing on the end of the input shaft before installing it in to the back of the crank, just to ensure its the correct part.

well i went ahead and bought the pilot bushing so now i have both and the new bushing is the same size as the roller bearing but the piece i pulled out has a outer wall of not even a 16th of an inch thick where as the replacement parts have walls of about a quarter of an inch thick so im thinking maybe you have to kind of work the bushing down to size and i dont have my transmission here right now its being rebuilt anyone know the diameter of the input shaft of a t56?

Here are some pics so you can better understand what im talking about. the one on the left is what came out of the engine, the one in the middle is the replacement pilot bushing, and the one on the right is the replacement pilot bearing.
