Default What 5 speed should I use?

I am building a car with a L33 (2005 5.3l 315hp) and I dont wanna soend the money on a t56 and its just not necessary for what I am doing. What 5 speed can I use that would hold up to roughly 400 crank hp? I will be using it as a daily driver, it probably wont hook up real well and I'm more than likely not going to drag race it. The car weighs about 2300lbs also if that helps.

Thanx for any response that I may get.

Make sure and provide as little detail as possible about the vehicle.

I don't dislike T5s but I generally use them like you do and am not going to break them one after another. The V8 3rd gen F-body ones have the closest ratios in general. But the 4th gen V6 ones are easier to find for cheap at the cost of wider ratios. I'd rather have two V8 ones than the wide *** ratios of a V6 unit.

Anything is adaptable. When costs to adapt stack up, it puts you closer to the T56 which has ratios that would be more ideal for the L33.

Well at the moment I have a tremec from a 00 Camaro v6. I keep hearing ppl say they will destroy behind a stock small block @ 250hp or so. I already have more than that. Plan on having 400 atleast. What v8 tranny can I get, for some reason I can only think of old trucks that have a 5sp and v8.

The fact of the matter is that when 5spd's were prevalent with v8's (1980's) the engines weren't really making enough power to justify a strong 5spd. Thus the t5 from an early firebird would shatter behind even a stock ls1. The t56 debuted in the early 90's which is when motors again started to make hp. In essence there is no stock 5spd tranny that will hold up to a stock ls engine let alone one making 400hp.

You could build a t5 to handle that amount of power however it would cost a lot and would still probably be a tad marginal at best. So at that point your still better off going with a t56.

Alright well what about a 4 speed? Old school Muncie or something. What kind of power can a M20 handle?

an m21 or m22 should hold up no problem however the ratio's of such are spread rather far apart unless you get a close ratio.... the 4 apeed also means you lose over drive. If your running 2.73 gears then thats probably ok but if your running 3.42's or anything like that then you need overdrive. Why not save up some money and just get a t56? Getting a muncie tranny would require a special clutch flywheel and bellhousing all of which are pretty easy to get but also cost money. In the end saving up and getting a t56 may actually be the same price than trying to make a t5 or muncie tranny work fully with an ls engine...The lack of overdrive would rule out a 4spd for me

No practical way to get a V6 f body T5 to work. The trans/bell housing bolt pattern is ford.
A V8 f body T5 could bolt up but they were not much stronger.
A GM tremec 3550/TKO would be a good choice but kinda pricey.
A Muncie or T10 will easily hold up, but as pointed out, no OD. I'm running a muncie behind a 5.3 in my 72 442 as a DD. It;s very easy and cheap to set up. Link below.

What kind of car are you putting it in and what's the rear end ratio?
