Default t-56 not going into third gear

Having trouble shifting into third gear. I got the car a few days ago, had only shifted into third once or twice before I bought it. Now it isn't shifting right. I put the lever where third is, and the shift lever starts rattling as I let out the clutch. So I just pulled it out of third and tried again, then a third time, and it went in and smoothly. But this has happened a few times. It sounds like it isn't going in gear completely. Today I've just been driving going from 2nd to 4th, since I haven't really had time to look at it to see what the problem is, and I don't want to mess the gear up. Any suggestions?

Its either syncro or third gear itself. I would replace both. We just went through this wityh 2nds gear in my buddies car, it felt like it went in but would pop it out when you let out the clutch. It had new syncros. We pulled it back apart and put a new 2nd gear in and its great now. I guess it all depends on if your gear is torn up or not

from personal experience, i would stop driving the car until you find out for sure what the problem is. Had some stuff break apart and tear up other stuff inside the tranny...

The T-56 are notorious for bending the 3-4 shift fork. Original is aluminum and an upgraded steel one is about 45 bucks. Just a pain in the *** to change. My T-56 is doing the exact same thing.

this^ If you fix it, buy a shifter with stops, MGW, pro 5.0, or b&m. overshifting breaks the shift forks. I've had some 600+ rwhp f bodies with stock t56 with just a shifter and never broke them

Mgw does not have stops , but the t56is internally gated so there really is no need for them ,
I would bet money that the reason for this third gear problems is worn bearing and excessive clearance in the trans from the worn bearings , 3&4 gear are separated in the t56 so this is the result and the blocker ring, 3rd gear and slider are probaibly trash by now

Do you have pics of said bent shift fork? Or did you read that? They don't bend, they break.

So it looks like I'll be pulling the t-56 then to inspect exactly what the problem is, and then most likely replacing the 3rd gear, syncro, fork, and billet keys. I guess by the time that's done I might as well get the whole thing redone. What would be a good place to get this done at? Ideally I'd be looking to spend under $1000. I've never rebuilt a trans before, how difficult would it be to do myself?
