Default Really dumb pedal question

Which way is the clutch return spring supposed to apply pressure. If un hooked from the master cylinder, should the pedal go up or down??? I can't figure out how to install this damn spring and yes I've read all the threads. Thanks.

The spring simply applies tension to the pedal. With the MC rod disconnected, it will hold the pedal in the up or down position.

Best picture I have of how it's installed (pedal down):

Ok, great. Cause that's what I was finding with the way I installed the spring. It was pulling the pedal up and then it would also pull the pedal down once it reached a certain point in it's swing.

One more question tho, does anyone know where I can get the center white plastic "U" shaped bushing? My local GM dealer says there is no such thing???WTF? And I can't find it online anywhere.
