Default T56 vs AY6?

Hey, I'm in need of a 6 speed manual to bolt behind an LS1 for a project swap. I only have experience with the T56 (never even heard of the AY6 till tonight). I have the option to pick up a low mileage AY6 for $600 and am trying to decide if it will suit my needs.

Is the AY6 as strong as the T56?

Are there upgrade parts for the AY6?

Does the AY6 use the standard LS1 clutch setup?

What is the dimensions of the AY6 compared to the T56?

Thanks,
Chris

The AY6 is hardly a viable 6 speed option for a V8 F-car.
It is rated at 345 lb-ft and has a diretc 5th/ one overdrive(.84. The 1-5 ratios are undesireable as well( 4.17/2,19/1.49/1.19/1.0). Not only quite deep, they have large steps. You would have to convert to a fixed-flange output and adapt a semi-remote shifter.....I doubt there is enough room to do this in a C-F4. Pass on the AY6!

Thanks. As I said, before last night I never even knew it existed (just assumed GM stuck with the T56 for the new Camaro).

Actually, the 5th gen uses a TR6060. It is the next/ latest gen Tremec 6 speed....an upgrade over the T56.

When I looked up Camaros, I only found the ay6? Are the internals all the same (ie: can I replace the shift forks with steel T56 versions)?

no, the forks are new/ different. There is really no need to swap-out TR6060 forks. They have the link cast-in-place and don't wallow out like the aluminum T56 fork.

So I have entirely passed on the ay6. Now I'm trying to decide between finding a used T56 to rebuild or buying a new T56 Magnum. Some people seem to like the Magnum, other say it's got issues.

not sure who is saying it has issues other than those who are selling modified old T56s. The Magnum shifter possition is not optimum but can easily be addressed.

I found a post on here where people were comparing the T56 and Magnum. One guy pointed out that some of the parts might be easier to break (missed shifts would wear the gear contacts). Others have said they shift REALLY WELL!

The Viper guys are loving the TR6060.

Issue I have with the TR6060 is it comes with a rag-joint output shaft. Is it possible to swap that out for a standard Yoke output shaft?

yes it is but not necessarily easy

Go for a Magnum. Sure the shifter location is not ideal for a Fbody, but that can be easily adopted. For the price and torque rating, it's hard to bit the magnum.

It's not going into an F-body, it's going into a Z4. I wish the T56 hadn't been discontinued, the cost of used T56s has gone through the roof!

In that case, the regular T56 with a GTO type shifter is your best bet. At least in a Z3 it lines up with the shifter hole. It also worked well for me on my E39 swap.

Another option that will be available in the coming future is the Magnum XL (not the condoms). It's shifter is located quite a few inches back compared to a regular T56. It would probably work very well for your case.

It is currently available for mustangs but a LS version is in the works per Tremec.

Good info!

To use a GTO shifter, doesn't that require the GTO version (GTO tail shaft housing)?

Any idea how far off the XL is?

Do you remember what the length of the factory BMW manual tranny was (from engine face of bell housing to shifter)?

I need to get under the car and take some measurements so I know exactly what I'm dealing with. I'd like to put the LS1 as far back (literally 1/8" off the firewall) as possible.

No you don't need the GTO T56, you just need the GTO shifter and shifter cup. These items will fit on a F-body T56.

The XL shifter is 34" from the tip of the input shaft/bellhousing. The regular magnum is about 26" and F-body/GTO T56 is about 29"

I don't have the BMW tranny length but I can tell you it is quite a bit shorter than a T56 or TR6060. Remember BMW uses remote shifters on there manual trans cars. If I was to guess, I would say it is no more than 25" from the bellhousing to the driveshaft flange. But thats just a guess.

Search for Z3, Nissan 350Z and Hyundai genesis LSX swap and you will see they all have their shifter holes located quite a few inches behind the T56 shifter position. Some of the swappers have made some pretty nifty adapters to move the shifters back. Below is an example

Bottom line, don't let shifter location limit your options. Get the best T56 you can and make it work.

I'd love to find some pictures of those installs (related to the tranny). I have been looking all over and all I ever find are shots of the engine (no tranny install pics at all). If you have any, send them my way!

edit: So wow... finally found a pic showing how short the T56 is compared to the stock shifter location!

So I went back and looked at the new TR6060 (like comes in the 2010 Camaro SS). It has a "remote" shifter kind of like the BMW's use. I wonder if I could use the external shift rail and then do a body mounted shifter like some of the racing BMW's use. Option....

Still looks like that Magnum XL would be the ideal solution! It seems to stick the shifter right about where I would be wanting it.

AY6 is the 5th Gen 6-speed for V6 cars.
