5th and 6th went out on my t56, so I dropped the trans, and because I know very little about them, I took it to a shop.

He cleans it, cracks it open, and tells me it is not looking good (surprise surprise).

To the best of my ability, here is his explanation: A piece of the reverse gear broke off and got jammed between 5 and 6. This has broken 2 teeth off of 5th gear, and stripped the syncros for 5th and 6th. I will need a new main shaft (why?), completely new 5th and 6th gear piece, and 5th gear alone.
Does any of this sound familiar?

What do you guys think of these prices?

Main shaft- $386
5th and 6th unit- $319
5th gear- $234
Misc washers etc- $20

Total of more than $950 in parts alone, and I only want to keep the car for a couple more years. Worth the fix? I know you will all say "well it depends what your plans are for the car." I am ready to have it off my hands but I also just received $700 worth of suspension goodies... so I am stuck between the two. I just want to know how legitimate this estimate is.

You can look on the various vendor sits for prices on these parts, which are less than what he's asking. Where in CA are you?

I like in Malibu, but the car is currently in Sylmar.
