Default Bearing end play and preload for used bearings

For those of you who have rebuilt T56's reusing the taper bearings, did you aim for the recommended settings or did you go a little loose or tighter?

My main shaft has 0.002 end play, 0.000-0.002 end play is recommended.
My countershaft has 0.000 preload, 0.000-0.002 preload is recommended.
I haven't measured my countershaft extension yet.

This T56 has 80k miles on it and everything inside looked pretty darn good, except for some wear on the 1-2 synchro.

I set them up by:

Mainshaft = 0.000-0.002 preload
Countershaft = 0.002-0.004 preload
Extensionshaft = 0.000-0.001 end-play

YMMV

What is your justification for the tighter mainshaft and extension and looser counterstaft?

Oops, misread your post. So what's the reason for the tighter clearances all around? I understand that new bearings will "open up" over time and the clearances will become looser. But I think these bearings are well worn in and probably won't open up anymore.

Anyone else? I've gotten a few suggestions and they are all over the place, but all agree that they should be tighter than what the service manual suggests.

It's as much the case (aluminum) expansion over the steel shafts as the transmission heats up. New bearings would dictate even tighter clearances.

Thanks for the help Mike. I did 0.001" preload on the mainshaft and 0.002" preload on the countershaft. I will get to the extension soon I hope.
