Default T56 Sealing Ring on Main Shaft

What is the purpose of the sealing ring that's on the end of the main shaft in a T56?

The reason I ask is because on my T56 swap into my Silverado, I have some adjustability in the intermediate driveshaft and can slide the driveshaft forward enough so the slip yoke pushes up against the sealing ring. Right now it's adjusted as far away from the sealing ring as possible. There is only about 1/2" of total adjustability.

When shipped, it helps keep dust, etc. out of the transmission. (It fits between the output seal and the output shaft and it pushed in by the DS yoke during install)

It serves no purpose after pushed into the trans.

Oh interesting. The only thing I could think of is that it could keep out out of the inside the slip yoke, but there's no real point to doing that.

Thanks for the reply!
