Default T56 fitment and shifter location quick crash course needed.

I have the opportunity to swap from a 2004R to a t56 behind the LS3 in my 72 Camaro. Do the Fbody t56 trannies have a odd shifter location compared to a conventional manual trans and do they have a provision for a standard style trans mount? Thanks

Yes it's pretty far back in comparison and yes.

If you'd like the shifter further forward to emulate a 4 speed, you could do a midshift conversion, which places the shifter 19.5" from the front of the bellhousing.

Measure twice, cut once. Or, cut a bunch of times on your tunnel !

The Trans mount pad on the F-body style extension housing can handle any conventional "2-bolt" gm style mount.

In the photo, is the 27" line indicative of the trans mount location? If so that is a plus, because my custom crossmember is set up for a 2004R and the trans mount is at 27". My trans is 29", so my driveshaft will have to be cut. That works much better for me because I can keep the aluminum drive shaft I had built too. Im guessing the shaft can be cut and rebalanced for 100 bucks or less?
Another question...What is the spline count on the output shaft on the T56?Thanks for the input!

Buy a Viper T56. Shifter location is near perfect. Its already built to handle good amount of power. I believe a Viper output is 30 spline.

The driveline shop will let you know if it can be cut; there's a minimum amount when shortening.

F-body and GTO T56 are all small GM 27 spline slip yoke.

That image is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for that! I know you can replace the shifter offset but they are like 85 bucks for the GTO one. I don't have a shifter for either, so 85 bucks would be in addition to buying an already more expensive GTO shifter option. I was hoping to find a way to make an fbody option work as it would be less expensive in the end, doesn't look like that is going to be an option at this point.

Thanks for the help.

I have an extra GTO shifter laying in my garage. I mounted my shifter on the center service hole and made linkage. I bought an extra shifter in case I screwed it up.
