Default Hot t-56

I decided to go with the recommendations on these forums to go with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my T-56. It's been in the car for about a week. During the Woodward Cruise in Michigan today, I noticed the it was getting pretty hot, including the shifter stick! It was getting warm, and granted I was in slow moving traffic most of the day, but should it get that hot?

And also, when I jump on it, I smell something like burning oil. I'm letting the car cool down, so I can make sure I don't have any leaks (like the filler and drain plugs).

Has anyone else experienced this? It seems hotter since I changed the fluid from Dexron III to the synthetic.

How many quarts did you put in and have you checked for leaks. Not a good sign . You may have a rebuild in your future

Internet advice is the under the old adage of "you get what you pay for"

Unless the trans was run on Synth since break in, you may end up doing
More harm than good doing a fluid switch. That'll be $0.02

it's been rebuilt once already. there's no whining coming from it. just seems warmer than before I changed it. i know they get warm. it could be because I was doing 2-10 mph for a few hours. lol.

i filled it until it started dribbling out of the inspection plug. I'm pretty darn sure I put the plug back in. But, if I didn't, that would explain the smell of burning fluid

Just tore down a box with de-laminated carbon due to non-appropriate lube.

OP, if you never cruise around at pedestrian speeds, you're not blowing air through the car and over the drivetrain like normal. That, or check your cat(s).

Heh...no cats. Single 3" exhaust from the headers to a Magnaflow muffler. Of course, there's no heat shield either.

I did find this:
http://www.carquestprofessionals.com...0%206.6.13.pdf

No mention of pre 5th gen Camaros or Corvettes at all. 5th gen Camaro T56 is recommended Synchromesh, Dex/Merc ATF and Maxlife ATF.

Another thing that has been mentioned in these forums is GM using Dexron III in the T-56 for production. Possibly for cost effectiveness during manufacture. More cost effective to be able to use one fluid, rather than using different fluids. I may switch to the Synchromesh anyhow, and see what happens.

The availability of DexIII is becoming less and less. You can't get it at a dealership, and Dex VI is fully synthetic, which you don't want to run synthetic in a bone stock T-56, from everything that I have read.

I went to the dealer, and tried to ask the guy at the parts counter about it, and he had never heard of Tremec. Nice knowing what you sell. Should have asked to talk to a tech. I may put a call into Tremec or Borg Warner.....

It's pure myth about switching from dyno lube and synthetics. Been there and run it. Amsoil Torq drive is about the best for a t56. Even the Amsoil multi vehicle synthetic ATF is amazing vs Dino dex3. You won't glaze stuff by switching, you won't wipe bearings, you won't destroy synchro. Other wise mine would have been toast a long time ago along with many others. And what you're experiencing is normal. It's just heat build up. I'd defiantly quadruple check for the fill plug.

99-00 have paper fiber blocker rings that are not compatable with synthetic fluid. 01-02 have carbon fiber blocker rings which are ok for synthetic.

99.9% I have the years correct.

T56 with paper fiber blocker rings do not want synthetic fluid. Tremac (was Borg warner) puts a sticker on the side of the transmission for what fluid it uses. IMHO I would/do use what the sticker says and on my T56 (for LT1 I bought new in 2005) it says DEX 3. You can get it at NAPA under store brand and other places.

same with some limited slip rear ends, like Eaton, which specifically say not to use synthetics (for diffrent reasons than a T56). If the manufacturer specifically says not to, I chose to follow their advice. YMMV

thom, yes I use a/c delco syncromesh no problems alittle stiff when cold warms up fine, kwells whines too I've had no problems you could also mix 2 quarts syncro and 2 quarts dex 3 like some corvette guys did at the 24hrs of Daytona back in I think 02' but don't quote me on that. they had pumps and coolers also though.

I ran castrol, mobil and synchromesh in my t56. I didnt like the first 2 the much, trans was very notchy when cold. The synchromesh was good but now I've started redline d4 and its by far the best no notchyness when cold or hot
