Default 1998 z28 t56 problem.

So the t56 in my z28 grinds every gear after 2nd gear. Im almost positive the synchros are toast. But I haven't had a chance to lift it up and pull the tranny out. Just wondering how costly a rebuild would be. Or would it be better to just swap another t56 into it? Im new to the forum so any and all help is appreciated!

Smart money is you need new blocking rings and friction cones. Cost really depends on if the shop has to pull the trans or not. I charge my customers $500 (plus parts) for the rebuild and an additional fee of anywhere from $50-$500 to pull it depending on what vehicle it is. The TT CTS-V I have in now got charged $100 to pull it because I had to rip the entire turbo system out (rear mounted) because it was welded from front to rear.

The blocking rings and friction cones are roughly $35 each so about $70 per gear for an F-body. GTO, Corvette, CTS-V are more due to being double/triple cone synchros.5

The problem with just swapping in another 1 is you never know what you are getting. I got burned last year on a "low mile" 3 rib Z06 diff that whines like a ****.

Check out Tick Performance and their rebuilds! I took my car to them for a Stage II rebuild, but their online prices include shipping both ways and you just pull your tranny, send it to them for the rebuild, and they ship it right back.
