Default Another T-56 Fluid thread...

So I'm about to pull my trans. to change out the slave so i figured i would change the fluid while its out... so far I've been driving myself crazy reading about all the different fluids to put in it. My car is a 2001 so I've read i have carbon blocker rings (supposedly) but i can't find any hard info on this either. so i guess i will just poll which fluids you guys would use. any good or bad experiences feel free to post em.

Reg Dex III or VI didn't really work all that well in mine. Very notchy. Almost undrivable in cold. Syncromesh was just as bad.

Haven't tried mobil 1 or honda.

Redline D4 ATF was the best I found until I tried Amsoil ATF. I got their yearly membership for $10 and it makes oil and other fluids super cheap. It's a 25% discount I think. Oil is about 5-6 a qt.

Synchromax is not what you should be using in that trans. Personally I use Redline D4 and have good results with it. I wasn't much of an upgrade over Mobile 1 Dex VI, but it was noticeable.

I'm using synchromesh because I had great results in my Volkswagen with it. But I can't say that it feels any different than when it had Dexron in it. Still feels like a piece of **** T56

If I had carbon blocker rings, I would change to this immediately. I am running their Torque-Drive in my Expedition.

Your poll is seriously missing the boat without an "other" selection.

Dexron III aft only.
If someone's transmission is making noise the fix isn't to throw thicker oil at it. I have been using Dex III in every unit that comes in and have never had an issue.

Someone finally is speaking some sense here. Dex III was (now IV) is part of the R&D from GM. They spent millions to make sure warranty claims stay away. If your POS isn't shifting right, your crap is wearing out. Maybe "other" brands help bandaid the issue but, it's not gonna get better. 250k on Wifes Acura, 400k on my POS Ranger shop truck, sorry, Mobil 1 isnt junk. Not saying there isn't other excellent brands, just not buying toooo much into the hype.

Borg Warner states to use DEX3. Tremec bought BW and kept the same position. I suspect more because they did not spend the time & $ in testing every available fluid. Also, IIRC pre 1999, T56 had paper blocker rings so "synthetics" over time broke these blocker rings down. I believe Tremec switched to solid blocker rings around 99 so that "conflict" with paper blocker rings should not be a factor now.

FWIW I did try Redline D4 and found it to be better in eliminating "cold shift" notchy feel. I have since returned to store brand DEX 3 since 2005 and find the tranny works just fine

I agree with the one posters note saying if your shiat is old & worn...any form of mystery fluid is only a Band-Aid if it does in fact initially improve a shifting problem

Like many I don't dwell on using any exotic or synthetic fluids in my tranny or rear end since the manufacturers of both clearly state to use dino fluids. Eaton was specific about NOT using synthetics with their limited slip diff and Tremec/BW go further by placing a orange sticker on the transmission (next to fill hole coincidently) on using DEX3

That's curious. Does this apply to a t56 from a c5 or a hybrid? I was suspecting with the double/triple cone syncros you'd want something synthetic. Since you can push ttans fluid over 30k, a bit more cost isn't as bad as engine oil.

In my aisin az6, ford full synthetic manual trans fluid meant for the gt40 worked better than anything I'd tried.
