Default symptoms of too much power for a clutch?

I have a 2004 cts-v. It has a 408 in it. I've made between 505-547 rwhp, and I think the clutch is starting to die, even though it has less than 4,000 miles on it. It's an ls7 clutch, flywheel, slave and pressure plate.

What is going on, is I'll mash the throttle, the car will sometimes go sideways or connect to the pavement, and other times, it'll feel like it's just free revving. The pedal is constantly getting stuck to the floor, and it'll grind a little bit until I can get it pumped back up.

What do you think?

Try changing clutch fluid. It's probably pretty black if you're driving it hard. Make sure there's no air in system obviously. Do you think it's at all temperature related? Since it's been cool and I don't drive mine frequently my clutch feels drastically different until it warms up it seems like

I have fresh clutch fluid in. And yes I bled it fine. I can try changing it again today. I'll post results.

I would say your ls7 clutch won't like that hp level for long. Little test to see if it's bad is put the car in 4 gear and let the clutch out, it should kill it. If it don't it slips. I have had them run for a few seconds and die. Also had them just stay running haha.

Drive it easy until you get that clutch replaced. Google clutch explosion video, a slipping clutch could kill you if you continue to drive it hard.

Slipping clutch doesnt correlate to about to explode. It just means slipping

4th at 35 is a good test. Low engine speed, high load

What makes the clutch stay down after a hard shift?

I also have an LS7 clutch and at times when I shift hard it feels spongey... Has about 2,000 miles on it.

OP

I believe the LS7 clutch is your problem

IMHO with your HP level I would run a twin disc clutch.....or a better more aggressive single disc from McLeod or Monster

more aggressive disc materials do hold more power but the trade off is often chatter and less forgiving street manners, especially in stop & go traffic

clutches wear out just like brakes and faster when aggressively used.

oil or hydraulic leaks will also kill a clutch causing it to slip. There are several posts about LS7 clutches with pedal to floor and not wanting to disengage at high RPM fast shifting. Something about the self adjusting PP or something IIRC. A search on "LS7 clutch problems" should shed some light.

True but if it's slipping and you continue to drive it hard the heat created from it slipping could make it go boom. Like I said if it's slipping drive it easy.

The LS7 clutch is not that great to begin with, but at your power level you should have a better clutch. You should have at least a stage 2 clutch from Monster or one of the other companys. You will be glad you did.
