Default Downsides to driving with a worn out pilot bearing?

So after some extensive research on here I've determined that my problem is very likely the pilot bearing based on what others have done. It's very driveable other than the chatter from the bearing so I was hoping to leave it till the winter when I pull it off the road.

So my question is what are the downsides to continuing to drive it like this? If it fails will I damage anything in the trans? If the worst that happens is that I could get stuck in or out of gear, it's not a big deal to me because of how I use the car but I really don't want to do any permanent damage to the trans.

Thanks!

Get it fixed, bearing failure can take out the input shaft.
