Default Owners of McLeod dual disk - please comment

I am trying to do a last minute evaluation between getting a Cartek or a McLeod dual disk setup. Basically, I am going to need something reliable, that can be used on the street, and will hold about 470 RWHP. Any comments on the McLeod? I have seen very little negative stuff on the Carteks.

You should look at how much rwtq your car will be producing. That is generally how clutches are rated. I know romanss made 9xx rwtq with his dual disk. How high do you plan on spinning the motor? Mcleod doesn't recommend the dual disk if you are going to be shifting the car higher than 6400 rpms or so.

6400 is about where I would be looking to shift, if not 100-200 rpm less, so I would definitely not be going over that level. Also, I would be looking at about 500 or so RWTQ - not likely to go over that unless I add a 200 shot or something along those lines, but that would be better than one year off.

I run the Mcleod Twin Disc. I still have the old 1370 throw out bearing in there. Thats before the adjustble master came out. Its a great clutch. Not for the weak hearted though. Stiffer pedal and a little knotchy. But i aslo drive a International 4700 DT466E so its a cake compared to that. But this clutch will show you your weak points in your drivetrain. I broke 1 driveshaft and 2 torque arms. I have a Moser 12 bolt but if you have a 10 bolt be prepared to by a 12 bolt. As for daily driving you have to get used to it. Hope you dont drive in alot of traffic with it cause its not fun. Not undoable just its a on or off clutch no sliping. Just make sure if you do go with the twin have it installed by a shop that knows what there are doing.

Yikes! The no slip part is great, but the drivetrain stuff scares me a little. I will be putting in a 12-bolt and new driveshaft. However, I am not sure what to do about the torque arm. Have you found one that holds up?

My Mcleod dual has stood up to 6700 rpm launches with shifts at 6700 rpms and It has been the best , by far , clutch that I have seen.

I had a mcleod street twin in my car for over a year now and it has always worked even with the stock hydralics. The only thing is i believe it engages too hard for the t-56 and it killed 3 of my trannies! We will see how long this trans hold up after i get it back. Just go with what works and that is the cartek from what i hear instead of taking a risk with a mcleod.

OK guys - thanks for the info. Looks like I might be leaning a little bit towards the Cartek way. The McLeod looks rock solid, but also something that looks like it could kill a car as a daily driver.

I use a Mcloud dual disc in my '98 Corvette, it works great. At least in my expierence, this clutch works fine for daily driving duties. It also has no trouble holding 480 RWTQ.

OK - maybe I still need more info to make up my mind on this. BTW, thanks guys for the info/experiences.

One thing is the on/off issue on these clutches. It is fabulous for the track provided you have good traction, suspension, and driveline parts. Driving that on the street, though can be another matter. Houston can have brutal stop and go traffic . . . I am trying to picture how to drive an on/off clutch with a large cam in stop and go without eating the rear bumper of the car ahead of me On the other hand, I gotta be able to hold the power without slipping or clutch flames.
