Default Paging Nineball. Need clutch recommendations.

Hey Tony, I need a new clutch and have been set on the Spec Stage III for a while now. What else other than the Spec would you recommend? And what would be the cost?

I have a bottle on my car now and plan on using just a 100 shot at the track, so I need something that will only hold ~460 rwhp. I still have the stock rearend, so I won't be launching at 6 grand. I wear Nitto DRs to avoid the temptation and usually only cut mid 1.8 60fts.

I've had good luck with McLeod Kevlar/organic clutches. I know tony has had good luck with his Cartek clutch.

What's the price for everything. I'm cheap and I don't need as much clutch to hold a 1.5 60ft. with 600 rwhp. I'm an occasional track racer, but a habitual street racer.

As with Fireball, I have had great luck w/ the Mcleod kevlar/organic clutches. They hold great at the track and are real easy to drive on the street. Smoke_ur_50 is using this as well.

Well...neither option I previously listed is cheap since you need to upgrade hydraulics. (figure 800-1000 dollars)

I'd shy away from SPEC as I've personally seen some horror stories with that clutch.

Another option is the new McLeod sintered iron disk clutch (REV-LOK). It been released and retails for 420 thru thunder racing. But, I wouldn't recommend this clutch if you have a stock rear (I'm a beta tester for this clutch). It grabs really hard and I'd be scared of ripping the stock rear out of the car (mine will chirp 5th on GSCs)

If anyone ever told you that I recommended a SPEC clutch, go ahead and slap them for me. Those suckers make great wheel choks at the shop though.

I tried three different Mcleod single disk setups and they always held great until they started to wear (usually about 3 months of racing) but I think they prematurely wore because we didn't have the adjustable hydraulics back then. So, I basically tore them up. One of the organic disks even disentegrated while out street racing, and I had to get a buddy to tow my car home with a strap. Their Kevlar disks held much better than their organic disks, but they chattered awful in my car, making the entire dash shake and my FLP's bang the floorpan. Its not Mcleod's fault, George told me it would be like that before I bought it. Oh well, I just needed a clutch that could hold the nitrous I used to run.

I still like the Cartek setup I have. It never stinks up, never fades, and remains consistent all day long at the track. Perfect for me since I love to bracket race and can count on its consistency off the line, even when I hot lap the car. The first one I had lasted about 15K brutal miles and 100s of 1.5-1.6 slick launches before it started to slip (finally). Even when it was starting to slip I was still cutting mid 1.6X short times in this tank. I got their newer version (revised disk) and this sucker is sweet! Not only does it seem to grab harder, it doesn't chatter a single bit. Works great so far.

Yep, I was so sick of clutches that I almost switched to an A4 (or TH350) setup. Remember that? This clutch changed my outlook. I've seen Julio sell them for like $600 with the hydraulics, so that isn't too bad at all.

Either way David, make sure you DO get an adjustable master for ANY clutch. That is a must in my opinion. There are a variety of pressure plates and disks out there that can hold, but make sure you get the master too.

My almighty Stg. 3 Carbon clutch lasted 2K miles and ONE pass at the track, before it blew to peices in my bellhousing .

Then Star tells me tough ****, and they'll send me the "fixed" blown up disk. They're product sucks, and they're costumer service is lower than whale ****.

Yeah I use the McLeod kevlar/organic clutch too and love it1 It is actually pretty easy to drive on the street compared to some of the other clutches out there.

Tony, there was probably a reason your car shook like that becuase mine did too for a little bit(not to the extreme your talking about). I reused my pressure plate after having problems with the stock hydraulics. I sanded it down real good(still had burn marks on it though) but once I got the clutch in it initially was jumpy like you said. After I got several miles on the car it all went away and I have an absolute smooth engagement now. I know a couple other people that put thiers in brand new with the adj master and they dont have any of the jumpiness or chatter.

So I'm guessing you reused the pressure plate?

Resurfaced the pressure plate once, and replaced it once. The organics did not chatter at all, but the kevlar/kevlar was pretty horrible each time. I was really hating owning an M6 with that setup, especially when it started slipping.

Adjustable masters would have solved about 50% of my old problems, but not the drivability issues. Gotta remember I am around a TON of clutch installs here and I've never been in a kevlar setup car that didn't chatter like mad.

are you talking about chatter as in when you slip the clutch to get the car going and it shakes or just sitting there with the car in nuetral and hearing a little chatter come from the bellhousing?

I have a littel noise from it in nuetral but it doesn't bother me since I know it's normal.

chatter as in violently shaking the entire car, making the change in my ashtray hit the lid, and making my FLP headers hit my floorpan. All of that would happen if I tried the drive the car "normal" from a stop. I had to rev it up to excessive rpm to slip it out in order to avoid that mess.
