Default SPEC 2 or 3 in H/C daily driver C5??? or other? NEED opinions...

I'm putting a clutch in my car here really soon.. and I need to make a decision. I hear that the Spec stage 3 is an on/off clutch and isn't good for a driver.

I need a clutch to hold a Heads/Cam (G5X3), FAST 90 combo... all bolt ons' etc.. combo in a 99 C5.. maybe eventually a lil spray on top of it.

What do you guys think??
What should I do?

Thanks
Steve

Ive never had or driven a Spec....but I guess it would depend on what you definiton of driver is. I have an OZ700 that I love. Im not running as much HP as you...but it will hold what you have and alot of spray. I think that mine is very streetable. As expensive as clutches are, it would be worth considering before you make your decision. J-Rod done a pretty good write-up in a thread not too long ago about clutches that he as run.

I daily drive my spec stage 3 and to be perfectly honest, it's hard for me to tell it from stock. It grabs a little sooner and quicker but that took maybe 5 minutes of getting used to. It's no big deal, really.

My Spec III has virtually no chatter whatsoever. It is totally streetable. Just make sure you break it in properly.

I daily drive my z06 and it has a spec stage 3 in it. I really like the clutch and it grips great. Like previously mentioned it is not far off from stock.

definitely go with the 3. it feels almost identical to stock. if you get the 2 you'll be hitting yourself later for not getting the 3.

hmm.. search proved some horror stories on the spec... I know of 2 people with the spec 2 and love em.. and a third person who has the 2 got 12k out of his...

There is no reason to get the spec 2. If you're going to get a spec, get the 3.

as a former spec3 owner i can tell you i was pissed when it just went out of no where...no warning..no slippage..nothing. was getting ready to run a mustang on the street..cleaned my tires up (didnt do a burnout)..basically reved it up and just let the clutch out to get the wheels to spin, came to a stop and the thing wouldnt disengage...feels like its permantly welded to the flywheel. needless to say i wasnt happy.

i went with that Textrailia oz700...waiting on it to come in...heard some good things about it do far so i figured id give it a try. they only had one issue when they first came out that the disc was cut too large a diameter and that was causing some problems. but they've since corrected this problem and all is well supposedly.

if your going to get a spec get the 3! I just installed mine and love it! Pedal is a LITTLE bite firmer but otherwise after the breakin it feels completely stock.

Going from stock to Spec III isn't so bad. Going from Spec III to stock, you become really happy to go back to stock. At least I did.

So if you go stage III... don't ever go back to stock.

Spec clutches - that's opening a can of worms.

Seriously, we installed one in a customers Z06, after having it Zero Balanced and then matched balanced and we got this odd vibration at around 4,000 RPM. Took the car apart, had the entire assembly balanced again by another company, put the car together - same thing. Bad vibration at 4k RPM.

Next step - entirely new Z06 clutch, PP, flywheel assembly over-nighted direct from GM. Installed without ANY balancing and the car drives like new. Not sure what the deal was but he is trying to get his money back from SPEC and they won't return his calls.

Now, mind you, we had this unit zero balanced twice from 2 seperate reputable shops in this area that have been in the business of balancing/machining automotive parts for 20 years...each.

Personally, when my clutch goes, I'm installing a new unit direct from GM. I've seen many cars go over 450+ rwhp and some approaching 550 with careful clutching on a stock Z06 clutch.

Again, JMO.
