grinding in all gears after hurst install, need help

grinding in all gears after hurst install, need help I just installed a used factory hurst shifter last night, and then gave it a test drive, everything was fine, felt really good. well today it is very difficult to get into gear and grinds in if try to throw it in gear ( like a fast shift). 
As I switch shifters I also changed the tranny fluid. The old fluid was still bright red, but thought, why not. Used castrol dex III with mercron.
Also Can I check the fluid level with the car on ramps? there a little over a foot high. thanks, I need helps quick to know if need to go to a shop
