Default Spec 3????

I have heard some horror stories about spec 3's blowing up, and shattering the bell houseing, taking out headers etc. Anyone have any problems with them at all? I will be running a stock re-surfaced flywheel, already upgraded the master. Oh, and its going in an 00 SS. Thanks

Rob

if you searched...you woudl have found out that a **** load of people have problems with them...but not shattering stuff, just slipping like hell after basically no miles. I've heard good stuff about it too, but when i go to upgrade my clutch..its gonna be the ls7 clutch becasue i don't have enough money for a spec 3 just to have it crap out and have to pay to have another one installed...and that even depends if spec would give me another.

I've never heard a horror story from a person running a SPEC 3 in person, only on this website. I have friends running in the 6s in the 1/8th mile with a SPEC III on a 100 shot and it's not slipping for them. That's why I spent $300 and got a SPEC III from a user on here, NIB. I'm gonna get my stock FW resurfaced and all new hydraulics. It's all about the installation and how you drive it. If you slip it all the time when you drive it, it's gonna shorten the life drastically.

my PP cracked at 850 miles, and I'm only putting down 375 rwhp... Pretty sure its a factory defect. When the PP is cracked, good luck getting it to go into ANY GEAR. Put my stock clutch back in, etc just so I can drive it, no problems except it slipping at wot. I would definitely choose something other than Spec. I picked it because it was a hit and a miss, and I liked the good reviews I read, didnt focus on the bad ones so much.

I have the same setup but with only 600 miles on it. You can read my reviews about it in the clutch sticking threads, but I think it is AWSOME so far. Grips hard! I also love the pedal feel.

I've ran a Spec stage 3 with a stock re-surfaced flywheel for over a year now, its been great so far. In fact I twisted an axle in my 10 bolt with it and it's held up to some major 6 speed abuse with my 9" too.

I had a spec stage 3 clutch with less then 6k miles and I threw a spring from the hub.

I had to pull the tranny and I went with a stage 4 clutch which is a solid disc. It is holding up fine and I really like it. It is really not that bad at all, plus it will hold.

How did you guys break it in???? I figured 500 miles of easy driving, no slipping it, and using dot 5 fluid.

That is the reason that I bought it. I know that I will be no where near 680rwhp, but its better safe than sorry I figure. I am estimating, after tuning that I will be around 425-450 before the spray.....

Throwing my hat in the ring. Bought my car with a Spec III installed. Ran it for about 2K miles and two of the springs worked their way out and into the housing making all kinds of rukus! Found a couple small holes they made in the bellhousing Swapped it out for a worked over McLeod, balanced and everything. Right after I had it installed, I got a huge bang one morning trying to start it. While driving it, I got another bang as a 13 MM socket went right threw my bellhousing. Couple days after that the starter made some horrible noise and died. Found out after a couple minutes under the car that the socket got wedged between the starter and the flywheel and broke the starter off the mount (only one bolt was holding it). The second bang was the socket getting caught somewhere and making a fist size hole in the housing. My housing look like swiss cheese. Very happy now with clutch, but still have my Spec III hanging on my garage wall as a reminder!

is that a reminder not to leave sockets laying around and to make sure you have all your tools in your tool box before starting it????? Damn, though, sorry to hear about your troubles. A buddy of mine had to send his mcleod back twice, and now its finally right. But then again, his is an LT1.....
