Default transmission whining

my tranny is making this whining noise when its in gear that matches the pitch of the rpm, meaning it gets higher pitched as the rpms go up. if i press in the clutch, it doesn't go away but will get lower in pitch as it matches the rpms of the enginecas it comes back down. if i put it in neutral, it'll jump down. if i downshift from say 3rd to 2nd and keep the clutch in the whole time, the whine will be low in third, go to almost nothing in neutral after the rpms go down, and then jump back up to match the high rpms of 2nd gear. 5th gear is barely noticeable, but thats maybe because i haven't been at a place where i could go a speed high enough to hear it. the transmission was rebuilt less than 5k miles ago. there is no sign of fluid leaking anywhere. i'm at a loss.
