M/T - Clutch Pressure Plate Wear Indicator Adjustment

Bulletin No.: 04-07-31-005

Date: August 19, 2004

INFORMATION

Subject:
Clutch Pressure Plate Wear Indicator Adjustment

Models:
2004 Cadillac CTS, CTS-V
1997-2004 Chevrolet Corvette
1998-2002 Chevrolet Camaro
1998-2002 Pontiac Firebird
2004 Pontiac GTO

with Manual Transmission and LUK Clutch

During the shipment of a service clutch assembly, it is possible for the pressure plate wear indicator adjuster to shift from the "new" position. If the clutch adjusting ring steps are not adjusted fully out, improper clutch operation may result. The clutch may not release completely or may bind when pedal pressure is applied causing the hydraulic line to blow off.

Dealer technicians need to be reminded that a thorough inspection of a service clutch is necessary prior to installation. The wear indicator needs to be in the "new" position with the adjusting ring steps fully out.

If a readjustment is required, it must be accomplished Off-Vehicle by mounting the pressure plate in a press.

For Corvette models, this procedure can also be accomplished On-Vehicle (with the aid of an assistant) by removing the flywheel inspection cover.

Important: The correct torque specification for the six clutch pressure plate to flywheel bolts is 70 N.m (51 lb ft).

Adjustments:

Important: Clutch pressure plate adjustment is only necessary when the driven (clutch) disc is worn and the pressure plate has compensated for the worn disc.

(See pic #1)

Place the clutch pressure plate, flat surface down, on a press.
Compress the pressure plate diaphragm spring fingers until tension is released from the stepped adjusting ring.

Hold 2 screwdrivers or other suitable tools, and place them against 2 of the 3 stepped adjusting ring tension spring stops (1), just ahead of the adjusting ring tension springs.

(See pic #2)

Using the screwdrivers, rotate the stepped adjusting ring counterclockwise (compressing the tension springs) until the adjusting ring steps are fully adjusted out, then continue to hold in position.
Release the press pressure from the pressure plate diaphragm spring fingers.
Release the adjusting ring tension spring stops.
Remove the pressure plate from the press.
