Default Tricks to remove the transmission?

Hello, I did a search on "Removing Transmission" but nothing came up. I have gotten through the step of removing the 8 bolts holding the trans to the bell housing. I CAN'T get the darn trans apart from the bell housing. I used a rubber mallet, screwdriver, kicked it, Pushed it, pulled it and Swore at it... (the last one was the most gratifying). Are there any tricks that you guys used to get out of the situation I'm in? Any pics, or stories will be helpful. There just isn't enough room to get a good depth screwdriver in there to pry at it.

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks,
-Raj

I got 8 bolts out. I was on installuniversity's site, and the step said there were 8 bolts, and the last 2 to use with extensions. The first 6 were pretty cake, but the last 2 took a long ares time. I'm assuming that that site has it correct with 8 bolts?

Make sure the tranny is at level, as if it had the tranny mount on. It should slid right off. Again make sure all the screws are out.

remove the driveshaft

seriously though, they can be a bitch sometimes. Just work at it and make sure everything is in line on a jack of some sort. If the tranny is hanging, then it wont come out.

no dice.

Should I try heating up the joint between the 2 parts with some Propane or MAP gas? I mean, its not even looking like its close to coming loose.

I'm going out of town tomorrow. Damn I really wanted to have this thing off today.

while you are under the car look above the tranny and make sure the "shifter flange" isn't hanging on the opening where the console/shifter goes. If thats all ok then try jacking up on the tranny and letting down on the tranny. Pull from as many different angles as possible. Another thing that may be holding you up is the dowels could be rusted from the tranny to the bellhousing. If that is the case then it is just going to take a LOT of pulling, pushing, prying, and beating (within reason of course). When you get frustrated just take a little break and drink a cold beer. If you attack it again with a clear mind it will make the whole process a little easier. Believe me....the first time i pulled my tranny it took me about 5-6hours of constant prying to get it to move at all. Just take your time and it will work!

I had to pry on mine and i think that is what ended up ******* up my bellhousing and causing me to trash slave cylinders. I would recommend hooking the back of the tranny to a come along, maybe on the tranny mount, and pulling it off that way.

I wouldn't recommend this method....but if you do decide to do it be extremely careful! You DO NOT want that car to rock back off of the jack-stands!

condensation from the ac and water on the road will cause the dowels to oxidize and get stuck. the first time you pull the tranny out you gotta pry the **** outta it

Why are you guys saying the clutch won't help? You would have the force of the slave cylinder against the clutch fingers helping you.

I assume you have all the torque arm **** disconnected? If you are using a tranny jack raise an lower it to break loose the bond. If no tranny jack use a bottle jack back by the tail end.

Best thing to do is remove the starter and hit on the bell housing towards the rear with a weighted soft headed hammer like a lexi hammer or dead blow or brass. not large blows to it but soft enough to get the bell housing to start to move off the metal dowels that welded them selves to the bell housing due to electrolasis of the dissimilar metals. Once you get the pass side to get a gap your home free but try to get the left and right to move at the same rate so you dont crack the housing.

Hope this helps, Dave
