Default M6 clutch question

Buddy has a 393 setup in his 96 Z28, M6 tranny, McLeod twin disc, while car runs will not shift into any gear. Hydraulics work fine but just won't shift. Local tranny shop told him $350 to pull and inspect and likely the bearing behind the clutch is not in correctly.

Anyone have any insight or experience with this before he hauls it off.

Maybe a sezied pilot bearing, clamping on the imput shaft? But then again, you would have to pull it out to check.

I had this problem after I took out a telephone pole. THe pressure plate is probably faulty or another shim is need for the slave cylinder. If I were him I would just pull it myself and save the money because the setup is shot. Now this is only if the car shifts when turned off. And this is if the system is properly bled.

what do you mean by if the system is shot and if the tranny only shifts when off, cause mine only shifts when off, but when i turn it on it wont let me shift into any gears, the way i bleed my system like a brake line, so what do you think i should do

Having an aftermarket clutch possibly changes the travel distance. For instance, Ram now ships a shim that sits behind the slave cyclinder and provides the extra travel distance to compress the clutch. I had a shop install a new clutch and they didn't resurface my flywheel, nor did they torque it properly. Result was a completely burned clutch and friction disk after 50 miles. Pull it and have it inspected.

thats true about the shims, if you cant get the car into gear you will need additional shims, but thats something you would notice right away, i was under the impression the car was working fine and just stoped going into gear, maybe I read it wrong

i dont see why not, im not sure if there are different thickness shims or not, but my guess is that there is just one, i would go to your local GM dealer, soeak to the parts guy, tell him you need a slave shim. They will ask you the vin fir your car but that will obviously be useless info if you did an A4 to M6. He should be able to find a diagram of the entire assembly and find that part for ya... i gotta run, good luck man!

Brand new engine and McLeod twin disc, brand new billet stell flywheel, master/slave, etc, all new, car has never rolled more than in and out of the garage by pushing. Sounds like the shimming is the issue. It's definitely not SHOT, I have my doubts it's a bad or incorrectly installed pilot bearing. Good suggestion to just pull ourselves.
