Default Why cant we use regular chevy clutchs?

Why cant we use a regular chevy clutch disk so long as its 11", 26 spline and 1.125 input shaft? Whats the difference between the old clutches and the ls1 style?

The only difference might be the cover bolt pattern as well as the finger height.

Meaning you could use a regular chevy disk with a stock pressure plate (organic)?

The pressure plate is the specific LS1 piece.

Disc thicknesses are different. LS1 is thicker to take advantages of self adjusting clutch.

To answer you question, be careful using older GM discs making sure the inside diameter of the facing is greater than 7.6". Otherwise, it will overhang the pressure plate. I am not aware of an older GM 26 spline disc that has this large of a inside diameter.

The self adjusting mechanism will compensate for a thinner than LS1 disc.

You also need to check the cushion of the disc. That is how much it expands from a compressed state when you push the clutch pedal in. The LS1 pressure plate only lifts about .055", so you want your cushion to be less than about .035" so the disc will release properly.
