Helicoil is the best way to repair a stripped hole for sure. However, if you want to give this method a try first, it cant hurt anything. Anyway, take some JB Weld on a toothpick and just coat the outer thread area of the stripped hole. Let dry for a day and then tap very slow and carefull. I bet you will be able to get a full torque on it without the threads giving. If if does not work you have lost nothing but time. Drill it out, re-thread for a helicoil, and install the helicoil.

After swapping in just about every brand of shifter, I ended up stripping all 4 holes

Put 4 helicoils in and she's been shifting fine eversince

You may notice that the better aftermarket shifters come with new bolts. Its because the billet plates are thicker and it robs thread engagement if the std bolt is used. This loss of engagement puts more strain on the fewer threads that are loaded. Also , many over -torque these bolts.

Theres 2 kinds actually, one for metal (original, black and red tubes) and one for plastic and other repairs (orange and blue).

You'd want the one for metal.

These work quite well for repairing threads http://www.timesert.com/

I have used them before with good success.
