Default is my tranny f-ed

here is the deal when im on the highway around 70 mph when i shift 4-5 and 5-6 i hear a loud almost grinding sound... but doesnt happen in 4 or 6th gear only between 5 both ways but when in 5th with gas down no grinding but when i let off for a split second i hear a little grind. any ideas

i think it possibly has to do with a shift fork or synchros but a spoke to a mechanic who said it would do that until i get the while thing rebuilt but could drive like that for another 70,000 miles...?????

what will it cost to repair this?

Does the shifter move when you are on or off the gas? my car broke the 5/6 cluster and it wouldnt go into 5th, i could get it in 6th but it would eventually come out of gear. The shifter would move depedning on throtle application.

It is likely internal trans. Could be a few things only a tear down & inspection would tell you for sure what the deal is.
Could be slider keys, shift fork pads, etc...........
