t56 third gear issue
hey last night i was driving on the highway in 6th gear...not beating on the car, just cruising. When i got off my exit ramp i downshifted into 5th, fine. Pulled to a stop light and went to downshift into 3rd, and it would go in. Popped out. Every gear works totally fine, however 3rd gear will not grab.
I know that the fluid should probably be changed, but i cant imagine that would cause my 3rd gear to stop working.
please help

Sounds like a bent shift fork. Been there done that...
You probably have to get it rebuilt and when you do get a shifter with stop bolts to prevent from overextending gears thus leaving you with a bent shift forks and the synchro sliders from popping out. rebuilds can be had for pretty cheap around 700 bucks or so with upgraded parts like steel 3-4 shift fork, carbon fiber synchro rings, etc

alright now im really confused
so after not being able to get the car to go in, or stay in 3rd gear for a day and a half, last night driving the car i was at a redlight and put the car into 3rd gear. It seemed to want to stay in 3rd gear at a complete stop, so i started off at the redlight in 3rd gear, and now it works fine again.

So why is it you make a 3rd gear start? Ive done this in extremes of weather( snow/ice) but August hardly produces any traction concerns. Seems you have other operator-related problems. Why is it you don't want to check the shifter?

i made a third gear start because while i was at the redlight the shifter actually stayed in 3rd gear without popping out. So i started in 3rd gear to see if it would pop out under load. It didnt, and now works fine. Seems like you may have some reading-related problems. but thats for you input, or lack their of.

Thanks for your rude reply , I thought of helping you- silly me .My reading skills are just fine but I do have a little trouble translating spoot-speak.BTW you should cover your own *** with spell check . Maybe what you really need is to drive your moms automatic Buick wagon.

All transmissions have their problems but the T56 is a hell of a solid tranny.
There's a member putting 950 hp through a stock T56. Its all about how you drive the car and maintain it.
Still, dropping the tranny is a pain, have fun with that.
