is there any way...
how do you tell what year a transmisson is out of or what car?? or is there any numbers on the outside of the case or something of that nature to identify it

Couple places. There's a number cast into the gear box case, a number on the blue ID tage bolted to the tail housing, and a number on the GM barcode label. The one you're looking for is 1386-something.
The last 3 digits tell you what type of T56 it is...
020 - 99 GM F Body
017 - 98 GM F Body (Will NOT work on an LS1 without a front plate and input shaft swap)
016 - 93-97 F Body
011 - GM Aftermarket

it the 93-97 version that wont work for the LS1 cars
