Default Top tranny bolt, Passenger side?

Can not seem to get to it. Any suggestions. I have a long (20") extention and the short swivle socket. Seems to be a clip in front of it. I can't see it, but think I feel it.

I'm going to be dropping the tranny myself next week, so I'm curious. Were the other bolts easy?

Default I can help

The annoying piece of **** in your way is a factory hook that holds the vent tube up there.. I just pushed it up and out, and used about 32" of extensions to bring my ratchet to near the tail of the tranny. No scraped knuckles for me. I've dropped the t56 3 times in the past year, so I am very proficient. (3 hours total time, off and on, in a yard on jackstands, hand tools, no help.)

It is easy to have a friend help you and have them work through the shifter hole and you underneith the car guiding the socket and extension in place by feel only.

With long extensions and working from the tail to go in across the top of the Bell Housing it was fairly easy to get to. I haven't tried the tranny first method but pulling the whole thing wasn't bad once I got it separated from the locator pins!

Putting it back in wasn't bad, two hints ( since I was doing it by myself). I made a stand for the trans with a 2x6 about 12" long set length wise under the trans and 4 - 1 1/2 x 2" trianglular wedges glued and screwed on the sides so the wedges hold the trans upright. Took ten minutes to make the stand and it really helped to hold it steady while a jacked it up (and took it down).

When putting it back, get the trans nice and high so the top of the trans is just about rubbing the tunnel and the slde it forward gently, it should go right in.

I am removing it from the bell housing. Only one bolt giving me trouble. I will try again after I heat up the garage first. It is in the 30's here now too.

I will also see about looking through the shifter hole.

thanks,
Dave

Youll need at least 36" of extensions and a swivel. Go at it from the tail. Its not that bad. The vent tube is attached to that bolt.

If you put a couple of the lower bolts/side bolts in tight, you can remove the trans cross member, and let the tail shaft of the trans hang down. Use numerous extensions and a swivel, then remove the bolt from the tail end of the trans. The bolt will stay in that clip that holds the vent tube. Once you remove all the top bolts, then support the rear of the trans back up, and slowly seperate the trans from the bell housing. You will think that it is stuck, and impossible to move, but it is just stuck on the dowel pins.

I have the crossmember out and the tail down. Have not tried yet today. Waiting for the heat to warm up the garage.

With the tailshaft of the trans hanging down, and lots of extensions, you will be fine.

I got all the bolts now. Now I just need to move the tranny back. Waiting for a friend. Kind of scared to do it without help in case it falls.

Just keep a couple of the lower side bolts in, but loose. This will keep the trans from coming too far back, too quick. It will be difficult to loosen at first. You have dissimiliar metals, and there tends to be corrosion on the dowel pins.

grab some extensions and drop the tail of the trans closer to the ground using a trans jack for you can see it better and it should be a piece of cake . I have done it this way on many clutch swaps in camaros and mustangs !

Make sure to empty the fluid. It is a bit lighter that way. You can also check the fluid for tranny bits.
