Default What has more potential to be quicker? auto or manual?

While trying to look for a car for sale, I'm noticing that most of the quick cars are manuals. Is there a reason for this? I know that an auto w/stall is great, but it seems that some of these really fast guys are doing 6 speeds w/4.56 gears. An auto probably should only have 3.73's I'd assume, but what are your thoughts?

I would say Search!!! Autos will always shift faster and are better for the track. Manuals are usually better for the street because you can do all sorts of things that autos can't. Deffinately more fun! Manuals put down more power to the ground than autos because of drivetrain loss.

Auto for the track. My car would be flying if it had a 4400 stalled auto in it, but it would be boring, that's why I got rid of my last car which was an auto. But it did 60ft 1.6s to my current cars 1.8s on the same tire (Nitto DR)

An auto is quicker [acceleration]. A manual is more fast [velocity].

Not possible for a race build auto to be slower off the line and the torque multiplication can't be ignored.

I would say that with a great driver...even on the track...stick could still be a fast. But after more and more power is made..it gets harder to keep up with autos. Shifts have to be quicker and quicker and quicker and timed perfectly......just cannot keep up with a stalled auto that is shifting totally on point.

if your not a good driver, the a4 is the way to go. i have a m6 and at 3,700lbs i 60 foot 1.42 on motor and next year it will be 1.3's. i think the m6 is better, more tq,more fun, faster from a roll,(and in most cases a dig for me as well) better fuel economy and better drivability w/big cams. auto's don't miss shifts and are easy to drive.for an all out race car i'de have an auto, fast street car(as i have)the m6 is it.

A lot of times what people fail to mention is that although an automatic may be quicker at the track, but the 4l60e can hardly handle stock ls1 power. Whereas the t-56 can handle what, 800 horse stock? If you are going all out and choosing an automatic you definitly need to get it upgraded. Whereas the ol 6 speed can handle it all as long as you're not pushing 15psi or something wild.

For any kind of streetcar / daily driver there is only 1 choice, the manual. The T-56 is an awsome tranny and I wouldnt ever get an ls1 car without one.

I think it is all about the set up. You get the right clutch in there and a 6-speed can be as fast or faster than an auto. One point that people fail to think about is that the stick car is far more efficent. I mean hell there is no slip on the big end like there is with a torque converter. The stick car will always run a higher mph. I find it hard to believe that an auto would run faster in my combination.
