All of a sudden, I am having serious difficulty shifting into gears 1 &2. The higher gears are not as bad, but can also be difficult. The car acts/feels somewhat like the clutch is not disengaging fully. Pumping the clutch and pushing it to the floor seems to help a bit.

The shifting action in 1-2 is also very inconsistent. At a dead stop it can be very difficult to shift into 1-2 or it can be smooth. I don't understand the inconsistency.

Clutch hydraulics? We do have a hydraulic clutch, right?

~103,000 miles. Tranny fluid's been replaced a couple times. No other noises apparent.

Sounds like you need to bleed the clutch system. You could have a bad master cylinder or slave cylinder.

Bad hydraulics. Check the color & level of the reservoir oil.If you dont see an issue there , pressure bleed. You may need hardware after that.

What color should the clutch fluid be? Where is this under the hood? Thanks.

If its original DOT3 its a clearish amber in good condition. If its D0T 4 it has a bluish tint. The res. is on the driverside firewall and only holds a pint or less.
