Default tranny help

my car has trouble going into 5th gear. it will go in if i am at like interstaet speeds or if i put some hellish force on it. but around town normal driving it feels like it goes through the syncros and stops when it actually gets to the gear, thus grinding. anyone know whats goin on or how to fix it?

Well it sounds like it is an internal trans issue if it is confined to one gear
Your gonna need to pull the trans & tear down to inpect the 5th gear.
(So the tail assembly off the trans)
Could be shift collar, shift fork, shift fork pads, slider keys, or the speed gear itself or a combination there of.
Only a disassembly & inpection will tell you the answer.
IMO might as well upgrade & rebuild it if it is out anyway , hope it helps.

try changing your tranny fluid, and add a syncro additive, if that does't help it could be something mechanical and you'll need a rebuild

appreciate the help. i looked at the clutch fluid today its pretty black, could that have anything to do with it? also i put a UMI stick on the hurst base, i wouldnt think that would have anything to do with it cause the base is still the same but i don't really know about transmissions at all.

YThe clutch is something to keep clean yes. But is it your problem, prolly not. It is only 1 gear that is an issue it's likely internal.
But a poorly releasing clutch due to hyraulic's will speed up wear on the trans & give you poor shifting characteristic's in all gears.

If you take the tranny out the 5/6/R is easy enough to replace the syncro yourself. The syncro ring itself is only like $2 or so.
