Default T56 retro fit

i am putting a LS1 style t56 into my 81 camaro. i will be using the Mcleod 8-207 adapter plate so i can bolt it to my older sbc bellhousing. i have 2 quick questions.

1. Do i have to take the front cover off to put the adapter plate on?
2. Do i need to use the extended length pilot bushing?

thanks

1. No
2. I do not believe so. After you install the plate, measure the length of the input shaft from the face of the plate to the tip. If it is 6.6" you are good to go. If its shorter than you will need an extended pilot. Assuming this is going on a Gen I SBC.

the input is 6.6 right now, and i do not have the adapter put on yet, so i think i need the extended length bushing.

If its 6.6" now, then you will need an extended pilot bushing because the plate will more the trans back by however thick the plate is. Sounds like your good to go.

1.No.Remove the T56 bell only and bolt the trans to the adapter.
2.More than likely..yes!Best to measure to be sure.I had to use the #8-1094 McLeod bushing giving me 5/8" input shaft support.
