Default What a day (clutch woes)

So today my SPEC stage 3 with only 1500 miles on it begins slipping. It started in 6th gear when cruising about 70 MPH; I went to accelerate in 6th, pushed down on the gas, the car shudders and I hear the engine rev way too high, and no acceleration whatsoever. There was a loud squeak / grinding noise from the tranny, and a faint smell of clutch. Pulled off, checked to be sure fluid was good, then headed back to roads. This time I accelerate in 5th from 50. Anything more than 50% throttle and the same thing happens. Unfortunately it can be replicated in 4th and now 3rd gears. Anything more than 50% throttle and well, you get the idea.

I broke in the clutch as per instructions; in fact, the car has only been used as a daily driver since the install as a track day wasn't planned until spring when it warms again. I called SPEC today and left a message hoping to get a call on Monday, but I must say I'm disappointed.

Vent over.

Not surprised. They seem to be hit or miss. Some have good luck while others seem to get screwed over. I had a Spec 4 witch lasted about 10k and did pretty much what yours is doing. I now have a Textrilla oz700 from Byunspeed. You cant go wrong with that combo, good clutch and AWEOME customer service. Hopefully Spec will take care of you.

So here's the overall update on this situation. Turns out that I had a warped pressure plate, enough that you could feel it running your finger across it. I took pics and sent them to Spec. Since the car was only driven about 2,000 miles total since the install one would assume that it was under warranty.

However, because the car had been put up for a time (hence only 2,000 miles) and the install was beyond the warranty period, Spec told me I was SOL. So I get to buy a new clutch to replace the 2,000 mile old Spec I had. I wasn't sure whether I was insulted or not, but they offered me 10% off a new clutch, then quoted me prices that were at least $150 higher than I would find elsewhere.

I respect Spec's products, and I'm glad that for some they work very well. However, I personally won't be getting any more Spec products, and the money that I had saved for a cam or intake is now gone.

It really seems that people have lots of problems with spec clutches. My friend had a spec 3+ in his Camaro (full boltons, cam, 12 bolt, built T56) and his was gone within 3000 as well. I'm really glad I didn't go for the spec.

I didn't on mine. I'll have to find the pics of it and put them up. Mine isn't nearly as dark as yours is, but you can see the warping of the pressure plate. You did one h*$% of a job on it. LOL

SPEC sucks!!! I had a SPEC III in my TA and it didn't last 1500 miles. I tried another clutch afterwards but it failed also. Now I have a stalled TH 400 with a transbrake in the car.

You got 10k out of the spec4? If you did track time lots of burnouts and what not that is all your going to get out of a performance clutch especially if your making anykind of decent power . I have a spec 3 and have had it for around 4k and still grabs well at the track and on the street but i know that it will probally last for maybe 4k more or less and ill be buying a stage 4! I think a texrilla is a great clutch but i cant see paying that much for a clutch that isnt going to last you that much longer if you treat it the same way !

My stage 3 lasted for 15,000 and about 20 passes. If you over shim a clutch it will "wear out" within less miles.
