Default Corvette vs. F-Body T56.

What are the differences, if any? I would like to know as much as possible. Gearing difference, material difference, syncro differences.. so on.

I'm mainly concerned because I have an INSANE deal on a Corvette t56 right now, and I was wondering if I could bolt it in place on my 98 bell housing. Will the shifter and everything line up? How will it line up with my pilot? All this will be helpful... I have my 98 t56 is pieces, and I can swap over parts as necessary...

Appreciate the input guys!

A corvette T56 will not work with a camaro. Mainly because the transmission is sitting behind you in a vette whereas a camaro its infront/beside you. and the corvette T56 directly connects to the rear transaxle. But i would personally go buy that transmission then go try to get a core on it or trade it with someone for a t56 that will work for you car.

Ok... I have the case of my old T56, with some parts, but a bearing let go and took out my second gear along with a few other things. Can I use the internals of the vette t56 (seeing its already disassembled) and put it in my Camaro case? Just woundering.

if you are not familiar with the inner workings of a T56 you would be best advised to leave a swap like that to someone who is. If the Corvette is the same ratio( there were 2) there are still differences in the synchronizers , mainshaft and gears. Also ,that insane deal on the Corvette unit may look just like yours inside if you have not driven or seen it prior to the sale.Be cautious.

I have no intentions of assembling the tranny myself. I have a tranny guy who said he'll take on the task. The price on the tranny was due to my current situation out of a good heart of a friend. Also, I picked up the T56, My friend (30+year ASE master at a GM dealer) says all the internals are the same, except for mabey the output shaft being a tad shorter. He says if that is a problem, then just give him a call, and he'll come deliver the part.

He gave me the vette tranny instead of a camaro one because the vette tranny was an 02, with about 10k on it... so I'm having my tranny guy gut my old t56 (its broke anyway) and replacing all the stuff with my new corvette guts. I'll keep you guys updated as well. Its a learning process after all, and who doesn't want to know?

There are alot of similarities but, no, the parts will not drop in.The corvette 3/4 synchronizer will not fit the fcar mainshaft. You said you needed a 2nd gear. Even if both unite were the same 2.66 LGR the 2nd speed gears are different( double VS tripple cone syncros). Seems that your 30 year guy didn't spend much time on T56s. He can figure it out though. Good luck.

Ok. I'll be sure to call my tranny guy. I said if he runs into any problems then he should call me ASAP. But I understand what your saying exactly now. Should I just forget about assembling the Corvette tranny, give it back to him, and try and uncover the camaro T56? I assume theres now way at all to get the corvette main shaft to fit inside of the fcar case...

There is no way to make a corvette T56 work with an F-Body. You would have to buy a new housing, new mainshaft, new input shaft and start over. The cost to do this would be outrageous and you would be better off selling this one and getting an F-Body. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Amber
