difference between a LT1 t56 and LS1 t56?

difference between a LT1 t56 and LS1 t56? What actaully sets the trannys apart? I'm considering on buying a LS2 to build on and I know the LT1 t56 isn't compatible. However, can I go to a tranny shop to have it modified?
