Question Shifter question

When I bought my 2004 GTO LS1/T56 it had the standard shifter, this was too far back in the car for my application ..................

I swapped it for a Camaro one (I think) that did away with the linkage, and came straight up from the selector shaft cup.

Problem ........... I cant engage 1st 3rd 5th or reverse, however 2nd 4th and 6th are fine.

Question ............ what shifter do I need to allow me to select all gears ?

Thanks
Pete

Hmm... Pete did you install a stock camaro shifter? or was it aftermarket? Just curious..

When you swapped in the shifter did you also swap the little cup? I heard the trans were physically the same between F-body and GTO...just the offset shifter. And Ive read that guys have swapped them without issue. Just replaced the shifter and shifter cup.

I know of a few people who have installed GTO tansmissions in their F-Bodies and had no problem shifting every gear with an aftermarket Camaro/Firebird shifter.

I would find it odd, if an aftermarket shifter would work where a stock one did not.

No idea if it was stock or aftermarket, and no, didn`t swap the cup.

I`ve elongated the holes in the cover plate slightly, and moved it back about 4mm, but it`s not quite enough, it doesnt feel like a clutch problem either.

See if it has an adjuster screw on the shifter. The bottom screw may be to tight so it won't allow it to go into the top gears on the pattern. It may have these screws if its an aftermarket shifter. they should be located at the top of the shifter box that mounts it to the tranny.

Well not to insult you, but I have seen the shifter installed backwords. It will bolt up but won't shift thru the gears right. Kinda exactly what you are describing. If it is aftermarket and setup to slide into third like a pro 5.0 or something this may be whats going on. Otherwise i'd try the cup but I don't see that really fixing anything.
