Default Slack in the shifter?

I just recently developed a problem with my shifter. I just installed an OEM Hurst shifter in my 99 SS. When I put the shifter in gear it engages fine but the shifter will move approximatly 3" backwards and forward while in gear. It wasn't doing this when I installed it. What do you guys think would cause that?

Is the shifter stick bolts tight? if so it may be the bushing on bottom of the shifter itself, either way simple to fix.
