Slack in the shifter?

Slack in the shifter? I just recently developed a problem with my shifter. I just installed an OEM Hurst shifter in my 99 SS. When I put the shifter in gear it engages fine but the shifter will move approximatly 3" backwards and forward while in gear. It wasn't doing this when I installed it. What do you guys think would cause that?
