Default Transmission whine. What is it?

It is a t56 in a buddys vette. When you let off the gas to coast, The tranny has a really annoying whine to it. I noticed it and he is worried about it. To have the trans removed is expensive on these cars. They suck to pull trust me I just did mine. throw out some ideas as to what it could be and how serious you think it is. He bought the car off the internet so he doesnt know when it started.

thanks,
Jeff

Rear differential noise? That would be my first guess by your description. All in the same area on a C5/6 anyway.

I dont think its the rear diff. It doesnt do it in neutral either. It progresses with rpms and is really only noticed when you let off the gas.

Well you need to get up under there & pin point it. But something is making noise on the coast down. It might only do it loaded in gear as well then.
It must be minor then? but it can still be a diff.

Does it do it in every gear including 4th ? If so then its probably the diff . If the noise goes away in 4th gear then its probably the transmission .
