Default Convert Z06 T-56???

Does anyone have any specific info on the differences between a six speed in a 2007 Z06 Corvette and an earlier F-body trans? I have stumbled across an almost zero mile T-56 from a totaled 2007 Z06 Corvette and am thinking it would be perfect for my 1935 Ford L92 hot rod if I could convert the trans without winning the Lottery first. I have an earlier Z-28 trans that I was in the middle of rebuilding for this project when I acquired this new one. I am almost certain the output shaft is different but have no idea about any of the other pieces. Six Speed gurus???

I believe the Vette gear box is a trans-axle (rear-mounted) unit that is not bolted directly to the engine - which resides happily under the hood.

Its a totally different animal and is a rear mount trans like the C5's . I would stick with an F body unit .

...when you said you acquired the zo6 unit, I assume you did not buy it yet; right?

It's sitting on the floor next to my older T-56 and once you get the main case off the Corvette diff, it looks like the main case is the same part. I have heard of some people converting these Corvette units mainly because the actual gearcase is common to all the T-56's, but I could be wrong. My F-body front plate and bellhousing bolt right up to it. I was "sponsored" this unit. I WILL make it work, I'm just fishing for easy answers from maybe one of the forum sponsors.

I am going through this currently after buying a $1200 z06 tranny. only to find out it may not have a mount like the f body, may need a new bellhousing, new input shaft, new output shaft, new tail housing and god only know what else. Let me know what ya find. Thanks

Yep , you are going to need several things to make it work . I'd sell the unit you have and buy the right one .

The zo6 has a different ratio set( like the GTO). If you have two units already. you should have the castings you need for the conversion. You may need to buy a GTO mainshaft so that the synchros of the Z06 install and fit into the Fcar castings.

I'm going to play around with all these pieces and see what I can come up with, I also have a broken T-56 for parts. If all else fails I'll sell the Z06 trans and just put one good F-body unit together.

I've been doing a little research myself (since I may have stumbled onto a similar opportunity) and calhoon seems to be correct. If one already has the F-Body unit, you swap over the bell, front adapter plate, tailhousing and shift offset lever to the Vette trans. Then, the only thing required is a GTO mainshaft.

The only thing I'm still a little fuzzy on was whether one needs a GTO input shaft as well (I think the GTO & Vette are the same). Can anyone confirm yea or nay?
