I am between a Spec 3 and OZ 700
I have been reading and found alot of problems with the Spec clutches but they are located close to me and some friends know the owner pretty well. I don't want to spend 500 on a clutch and it be a piece, but then agian I don't want to drop a grand on one when one half the price would have been ok. I would like one to stand to about 500-550whp on the motor if I spray it I am sure it would be close to 700whp. I am just getting into researching this and am not 100% on what exactly I need. I have been reading and am not sure whicj is better. Also what else would I need when replacing the tranny and clutch on a 1998 SS?

I have had no luck with Spec clutches and a reputable shop locally to me will not use them. Chatter and no durabilty at least in my case as well as several others here on the forum. I can send you pics of mine and the Spec flywheel that the ring gear is falling off after less than 8000 miles. There are some who swear by them and think they are great so you have to choose. I would never use another one nor would I recommend them.

I`m in the same boat (There both in my hand)
I have the confusion going on. My problem is their both in hand and I`m ready to move forward.
My spec3+ I just pulled out with maybe 5K on it. It drove me nuts because of the can of marbles sound in the bell housing area. So I pulled it out and it looks brand new almost. Its got a few track passes and a good amount of fun on it. And I think I found what the can of marbles sound was (slight wobble in the input shaft going into the pilot bearing.
The OZ 700 I picked up over the summer from a person who I know of pretty well and it has very low miles and it looks as new as the SPEC I just removed. So I mic. both of the discs there almost dead equal to the amount of friction pad left.
Which one do I put in now. The SPEC has never let me down never slipped no chatter affects. I took great care in breaking it in properly. On the other hand I`m gonna be real upset if I install it back in and I still have the can of marbles sound..... Or do I put the OZ in and hope for the best. It would have made my life easy if the spec was messed up but it looks new..

Also when replacing the clutch and the tranny as I will be doing all at once what all would need to be upgraded or replaced? Would I need to replace the flywheel with and aftermarket one or just resurface the one I have now? What else needs to be replced on a 98 SS?

I ran a SPEC 2 on my 346 making 400+ rwhp for over 40,000 miles no problem. I replaced it with a SPEC 5 shortly before I put in a 408. 5,000 rpm launches no problem. Since SPEC sells probably more clutches than all other mfrs combined there are bound to be more problems, also I believe a lot of clutches are being installed by dummies. Whatever clutch you decide on, have it balanced locally before install.
