Default hard to put in reverse, shifter problem?

okay, so i searched this and thought it was a bad selenoid, took it to a shop, and they told me its not, but its the shifter and since its a aftermarket shifter they don't deal with aftermarket parts, is this right? what can be wrong with the shifter where it won't go in reverse unless i force it, but all the other gears work fine.

Is it hard to move over or hard to shift upwards once over into the reverse pattern?

its really hard to push over to the right, not upward, but once in gear its stay in gear and works and it comes out and pops right back to the left. i grinded reverse while doing a 6-5th shift, so i don't think the lockout worked properly, but now its a bitch to get it in reverse completely.

Look at the fuse that the lockout solenoid circuit is on and see if it's blown. Not sure on yours, but on LS1's it's the ENG SEN fuse.

Sounds like your issue is different, but the ENG SEN fuse is under the hood. The MAF/02's/skip shift/reverse lockout are all on the same circuit and will throw the SES light.

On a '95 it's fuse #6 in the underhood box. Fan relays/02/reverse lockout/EVAP solenoid/EGR solenoid. With all that on the same circuit you should be throwing the SES if it's blown.

had the same problem. Its the reverse lockout solenoid. If your car is off try to put it in reverse with the key off, it is a bitch. turn the key on and its will be easy to put in. when the solenoid either goes bad or doesnt get power it is a pain to push it over to put it in reverse. apparently the skip shift solenoid is the exact same solenoid so if you have a skip shift eliminator, just switch the solenoids on the tranny and see if thats solves the problem. check the plugin under there for power when the key is on.

well. the fuse is good, no ses, and i took it to a mechanic, they said its not the solenoid, cables or anything electric, but the shifter. ans since its aftermarket they don't know the specs so they won't fix it. so now i have to wait til friday to take it to a aftermarket performance shop and see what they say.

If you have a stock shifter put that back in and test it. If that fixes the problem then you know what the issue was.

Sounds like solenoid related to me too. I had an O2 wire short out and that was one of the symtoms, along with an SES light and running poorly. Is this a new issue and is the skip-shift functioning? I doubt it's the shifter. If a shop is trying to blame it on the shifter I have doubts that they know if it's the solenoid or not.

I have had the same problem with my reverse, however, it was only AFTER doing an OBD-II to OBD-I conversion. The OBD-I PCM was for an automatic so I don't know if something was missed when we did the conversion to a manual. The transmission had 0 problems up until the time we swapped out PCMs so I would certainly think it is something in there. Thanks!

I've had this issues with my formula since I got it 7 months ago, the stick will go over where reverse is, but you have to hear or feel it go in or else it will grind on it, sometimes when it goes in it scares me cuz it sounds and feels like the trany is going to jump outta the car, really pisses me off when it grinds two and three tries in a row, but then sometimes it's fine, and it doesn't matter if it's up to temp or cold.
