Damage possible for t-56?
Well my car has been making a humming, kinda like a droning sound that i thought might have just been the tires and rims. well i got new tires today and the rims are in balance but the sound it still there. Its is relavent to speed of the vehicle meaning that the faster the car is moving the faster the humming sound... sounds almost like a turkey at high speeds. i was thinking that maybe my driveshaft might be out of balance. if so, could having the driveshaft out of balance tear anything up in the tranny? That sound has been there for a couple months , maybe even close to a year. Any help would be great.

It can tear up the rear bushing and seal in the tail housing which will cause it to leak the fluid out and burn up the transmission . In more serious cases , I have seen tail housings crack from severe vibration in the driveshaft as well .

tranny is completely full of fluid. unhooked the driveshaft and there is no play whatsoever in the back of the the tranny. We pulled the cover off of the differential and pulled both axles. They look fine and rolled VERY true. Differential looked fine. Had new rotors and pads installed about 2 or 3 months ago. Maybe it is in the rim? There arent any vibrations at all... just that annoying *** sound.... it does go away when the car goes under load/accelleration or atleast makes itself less known illd go get my other rims out of storage and see if it is infact in the rim.

If it was the rim you would feel a vibration. Run the same rpms in different gears and if the problem is the same at the same rpm its not the drive shaft. Fuel pumps make humming noises when they are going out but you would know if it was that before you turned the car on. It could be a worn input shaft bearing or a main drive gear bearing. Its most likely a bearing that is shot. It almost sounds like a fluid level problem to be honest but there are alot of likely culprits. Can you tell what part of the car the sound is comming from??

the sound is coming from around the right rear area. i thought it might have been a wheel bearing going out.. but we pulled the axle and it looked and turned fine. the rear end is full of lubricant. are their any other bushings or bearings on the right rear side of the car that would make that type of noise?

it has seen maybe 5-6 1/8th mile runs. no hard launches and they have all been on street tires. When we opened up the rear, everything looked fine, rotated fine, there were no broken pieces. I don't know. I would figure that if the rear had been making this sound that long it would have given by now. Im going to take a fellow f bod member for a ride and see what he says
